A Universe of Sound

The Universe of Sound project translates NASA photos into something people can hear. Images from x-rays, infrared, and optical data captured by the Chandra, Hubble, and Spitzer telescopes are turned into dissonant music, another way to “read” and experience their data. Of course, the vacuum of space has no medium like air to vibrate and, therefore, no sound that can be heard.

The Space.com article describes in detail how the composer Sophie Kastner converted NASA images into a musical composition. The sheet music also is available online for free.
